Rawdat Al-Salaam Burial Guidelines for Members of the Islamic Society of Central Florida
Note: The family of the deceased needs to provide a 24 hour notice of death before all funeral arrangements are finalized. Funeral services will only take place during daylight hours.
1. Upon the death of a member of the Islamic Society of Central Florida (The Society), the family or a representative of the family will call the Newcomer Funeral Home (The Funeral Home) directly.
2. The Funeral Home is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. After normal business hours, usually 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, a Funeral Director will be available through the answering service.
3. When placing a call to the Funeral Home to report the death, the caller should state the nature of the call and also state that they are members of the Islamic Society of Central Florida.
3a. If the death is at home, the Funeral Director will need to speak to a hospice nurse, or other official who can release the deceased to the funeral home. If there is no nurse in attendance, or no other official (i.e., a police officer, medical examiner) the director can not send personnel to remove the deceased from the home. The director will send personnel immediately upon confirmation of release. The transfer will usually be made within an hour, but circumstances (i.e., traffic, distance) may cause unforeseen delays.
3b. If the death is at a hospital, the Funeral Home must be notified by the hospital that the deceased can be transferred. The hospital should inform the family of the proper party to notify, usually Security or the Patient Care Coordinator (PCC). Once the hospital notifies the Funeral Home, they can make the transfer. NOTE: While the funeral home is available 27/7, a release may not be given for several hours after the death, or during evenings, until the next morning.
3c. If the death is in a nursing facility, the Funeral Home must be notified by the facility that the transfer can occur. Transfers from nursing facilities occur 24/7.
3d. Medical Examiners typically need a signed release which can be obtained at the Funeral Home. They usually do not release after business hours (Usually 8:00 Am – 4:00 PM, M – F). Some medical examiner offices outside our area do not release over weekends.
4. The deceased will be transferred to the funeral home.
5. The Funeral Home will contact the designated contact from ISCF immediately upon notification of the death to alert them that we are serving a member of the Islamic Society of Central Florida.
6. The family will be contacted by the funeral home to set an appointment to come to the funeral home to give vital information and arrange the time and day of the funeral and burial.
7. Ideally, the meeting with the family should coincide with the burial committee’s arrival so that upon completion of the preparation and funeral arrangements, all parties may proceed directly to the Mosque for prayer services.
8. It is the Funeral Homes understanding that according to Islamic tradition the prayer service will usually occur during afternoon prayers and within 24 – 48 hours from the death.
9. The Islamic Society of Central Florida will coordinate-
  a. The time the committee will arrive to prepare the body for burial.
  b. Pick up of the casket from the Mosque.
  c. The day, time and place (Mosque or graveside) of the service.
  d. Preparation of the grave and vault installation.
10. The Funeral Home will be available to the committee at the appropriate hour, and have the casket available.
11. The Committee will wash, wrap and prepare the body for burial, and place it in the casket.
12. Upon meeting the family, the Funeral Home will-
  a. Record vital and personal information of the deceased for the death certificate, obituary, and funeral home records.
  b. Confirm the service information.
  c. Collect charges for the funeral home. These charges include funeral home service charges, death certificates, and a grave marker.
  d. Collect charges for the Islamic Society of Central Florida. These charges will include preparation (opening and closing) of the grave and the cemetery vault.
13. The funeral director will proceed to the Mosque (or graveside) for prayer services.
